Light microscopy of the inner lining (mucosa) of the small bowel. This is the duodenum identified by the pale-staining branched Brunner's glands in the connective tissue of the submucosa (blue). These glands secrete alkaline mucus into the duodenum to neutralize the acidic materials arriving from the stomach. Magnification x60 when printed at 10 cm.
