Brazil. Formed by a geological hand, Sugar Loaf Mountain is the most recognized of tourist attractions to Rio De Janeiro. Marking the entrance to Guanabara Bay it served sailors for centuries as a settling location for their position at sea. Called originally " Pot de Beurre" by French invaders, it was later known as, "Pao de Acucar" (Bread of sugar) by the Portuguese. This was because sugar was the only known thing in the region and it was packed like loaves. Today tourists reach the top of the hill in two stages. The first car takes you up 700' up Urca Hill giving wonderfiul views of Corcovado Mountain, Guanabara bay and the Niteroi bridge. The second lift takes you up another 1300' to where you have spectacular views of Copacabana beach, Ipanema Beach and the rest of Rio de Janeiro. Local legend has it that Saint Peter (Sao Pedro) lies on his side and hugs the mountain to him. This is one among many such legends.
