Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Sulfitobacter pontiacus, Gram-negative, sulphite-oxidizing, heterotrophic bacterium (prokaryote). Sulfitobacter pontiacus is a marine bacterium that is an obligate heterotroph that oxidizes sulphite. One of the first strains discovered was isolated from the Black Sea. Sulfitobacter pontiacus dominates the sulphate-forming population of the Black Sea. Magnification: x1,600 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
