A crossbow, Madrid, dated 1587, Curved, strong steel bow with cord fixture and older (damaged) hemp bowstring. On top stamped inscription "JUAN DE ORIA MAIOR AIGO", on underside marked "PUEBLA EN MADRID" and dated "1587". Elegant, slim wooden tiller with triple-tongued quarrel groove, (damaged) curved bone nut as well as iron fittings and trigger. Early, elegantly shaped crossbow. Length cm. Provenance: Hermann Historica, Auction 23, lot no. 832. A small group of similar, signed crossbows can be found in the Real Armeria in Madrid.
