Americas at night, black marble satellite image. More densely populated areas are brighter. Reflected moonlight, and light from airglow and auroras has been removed to leave only man-made light. Data acquired by the day-night band of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on board the NASA-NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite, during 2016. Cloud and Sun glint added from moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) data from the Aqua and Terra satellites.
