Gaydon's bar pub sign 1975 number 0166

Gaydon's bar in Barnstaple (now closed) in 1975 and commemerating the local family of clock makers and jewellers in Barnstaple. Gaydon's Barnstaple jewellery and clock business supplied various church and public clocks in Devon, with that at Swimbridge church having an inscription dated 1880 in commemoration of the restoration of the church, with a note that the clock was supplied and given by the Gaydon brothers, including John Gaydon of Barnstaple and three other brothers now resident at Brentford, but all having been 'natives of Swimbridge'. The pub sign shows a moustached gent, presumably John Gaydon with a bottle of beer that has the Bass triangle on it while a young woman looks over his shoulder. The bar, in Cross Street, was later named Clayton's and the Glasshouse.
