An East Hampton Town Fire Marshal begins his investigation as to the cause and origin of the fire even as firefighters still work around him to extinguish the fire, as at 2:43 on Sunday, October 28th, 2018, members of the Springs Fire Department responded to a reported working fire at 23 Thanet Way in the Lionhead section of Springs. Arriving units found a residence fully involved with fire, and mutual aid was immediately called for from the Amagansett and East Hampton Fire Departments. Due to the heavy volume of fire and a resulting unstable structure, suppression was limited at a "surround-and-drown" attack. During overhaul operations an excavator was brought in to knock down the rest of the building so that crews could safely extinguish any remaing hot pockets of fire, and members of the East Hampton Town Fire Marshal's Office were on scene to determine the fire's cause and origin.
