Shepperton, Surrey, UK. 20th July, 2015. The annual census of the swan population on the River Thames 'Swan Upping' started today departing from Sunbury. The event dates from the 12th century when The Crown claimed ownership of all mute swans, (then an important food source for banquets and feasts).
