Smokey Mountain is a large rubbish dump in Manila, Philippines. Consisting of over two million tonnes of waste, it has operated for more than 40 years and is known for decomposing at such high temperatures that it will catch fire, a fact from which the location derives its name. Indeed, fires at Smokey Mountain have caused many deaths.

It is estimated that 36% of women in the Philippines use modern methods of family planning and million women have an unmet need for contraceptives. From free tubal ligation to free IUD outreach programmes, MSI are helping women in difficult circumstances take control of their fertility, so that they can stay healthy and are able to provide for the children they already have.
