These tumors at times assume largeproportions, sometimes causing complete obstruction; theymay be sessile or attached by a narrow or broad are soft and spongy in consistence, tender, bleed fre-quently and profusely from slight causes, and excite the dis-charge of considerable mucus. These papillomatous growths resemble villous tumors ofthe bladder. Dennis says: Such growths spring from thesubmucous connective-tissue layer; the confluent villi con-sist of an axis of fibrous tissue containing blood-vessels, and. Theblood-vessels are relatively large and numerous. Multipledelicate villi may compose the growth, giving its surface asmooth, velvety feel; or secondary knobbed processes maydevelop, producing a caulifiower-like surface. By obstructionto the venous return in the narrowing pedicle edema andcystic degeneration of the tufts may ultimately develop. Clin-ically they occupy a position between adenomata and carci-nomata, and, in cases that have been neglected or in whichsufficiently wide extirpation of sound tissue at their base hasnot been made, the later development of carcinoma is not in-frequent. Van Buren says: After ulceration and destruc- 490 DISEASES OF THE RECTUM AND ANUS tion of the mucous membrane, the surface of a vil
