Bacteria research. Close-up of a techinician holding a glass vial containing concentrated magnetic beads coated with antibodies (immunomagnetic beads) that bind to specific bacteria. Once bound to the bacteria the beads can be drawn to the side of the vial using a magnet, this concentrates the bacteria in one place, making it possible to detect the level of bacterial contaminants in the sample. This is being used to study the amount of bacteria present in food.
