Dogfish skin. Polarised light micrograph of a section through the skin of a lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula). The surface (top) is covered in sharp placoid scales, which are also known as dermal teeth or denticles. The scales are anchored in the dermis (blue) by spines that contain dentine (yellow) and are covered in enamel (orange). Beneath the dermis are blocks of muscles and the blood vessels (red) that supply them. Magnification: x6 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
