An old engraving of damping machine used in printing. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The machinery in operation wets or slightly dampens paper. Dry paper is run through on the rollers on and the damp paper collected on a roller at the other end of the machine ready for a press to print a colour onto it. Although printing can be done with dry paper some processes suit a slightly dampened paper. This dampness allows compression of the surface and allows better ink adhesion to the surface when it goes through the press.
