Average transparency of the water over the southern California shelf; Point Conception to Point Dume. Fig. B. Average transparency of the water over the southern CaHfornia shelf; Point Dume to the Mexican Border. mendous population on sea water turbidity is at times marked, as noted previously. But perhaps the most interesting feature is that although the waters with low transparencies extend farther from shore where the concentrations of population occur, these areas are where the shelf widens and the transparency would normally be less in any event (Plate 21, figs. A and B). The total eitect of the works of man may then be minor in producing the exceptionally low transparencies often considered the normal consequence of such progress. The charts showing average transparency (Plate 21) indi- cate that moderately turbid water (20-40 feet of transparency) is common 12 to 15 miles from shore where populations are con- centrated. In most of these areas this water extends well beyond the edge of the mainland shelf, a conditon not occurring along the so-called "open ; In the latter areas clear oceanic water intrudes over the shelf, often to within a mile of shore. Even over the Santa Barbara and San Diego shelves, tongues of offshore water project towards shore to a considerable extent. Such does not 84.
