We dug under the vitrified mass, and there found whatwas extremely interesting, as throwing some light on themanner in which the fire was applied for the purpose ofvitrifaction. The internal part of the upper or vitrifiedwall for about a foot or a foot-and-a-half was untouchedby the fire, except that some of the flat stones wereslightly agglutinated together, and that the stones, allfellspatic, were placed in layers one upon another (seesection, Plate I.)
