Eczema. View of the breast of a woman patient, showing eczema around the nipple. A rash and a number of eczema sores are seen. Eczema is an inflammation of the skin which produces itching and may be accompanied by scaling or blisters. Here, some of the eczema sores are scabbing over. This skin disorder may occur without any obvious external cause, or may be due to an allergy. For mild cases treatment consists of applying emollients, such as petroleum jelly, which keep the skin in the affected area soft and reduce irritation and scratching. In severe cases corti- costeroid drugs are prescribed and if bacterial infections develop, antibiotic drugs may be given.
