THE WALL The wall or crust is the horny sheath incasing theend of the foot, in the front and on the sides from thecoronet to the ground. It is through this crust thenail is driven, and it is upon this crust the shoe front it is deepest, towards the quarter and heel itbecomes thinner. It is of equal thickness from theupper end to the ground (from top to bottom). Thewhite corored wall is the poorest, while the iron col-ored wall is the toughest. The growth of the wall is 138 MODERN BLACKSMITHING different at different ages. It grows more in a younghorse and colt than in an old horse; in a healthy footand soft, than in a diseased foot and hard. In a younghorse the hoof will grow about three inches in a yearand even more, while it grows less in an old wall is fibrous, the fibers going parallel to eachother from the coronet to the ground.
