Mud wall construction in India. 19th-century artwork from India showing men building mud walls. Various forms of mud, sand and clay, combined with fibrous materials, have been used in construction worldwide since ancient times. This artwork shows equipment and tools used (bottom), while a system of boards (top) are used to mark out the boundaries of the wall. This opaque watercolour, in the Kashmir style, dates from the 1850s.
