Squamous metaplasia of the cervix is a benign (non-cancerous) change consisting of a replacement of the surface columnar epithelium by a nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium similar to the exocervix lining. Under the stratified squamous epithelium, the endocervical mucous glands can be seen.
