The Cavendish Bridge, a link between Mahebourg and Ville Noire Among the treasures of Mahébourg, a historic village with a unique charm, the Cavendish Bridge stands out because it is a link between the village and the Ville Noire district and also the east of the country. Also known as the « Ville Noire Bridge », the superb structure spans the La Chaux River and provides an unobstructed view of Lion history is well known and dates its construction to 1850, with maintenance work carried out later from 1908 to 1911. The first wooden structure was built by the notables of Grand Port, including Governor Higginson and Louis de Rochecouste, to facilitate the crossing of the La Chaux River in 1850. It bore the name of the governor until 1911 when, with the increase in traffic, it was renovated under the colonial government by Paul le Juge de Segrais. The structure was changed to steel, stone, and concrete and was named Cavendish after the then governor, Cavendish Boyle. This bridge is still the longest on the island and spans over 150 metres. It was restored on the occasion of its centenary with the construction of a pedestrian path.
