Hurricane Dennis. Satellite image of Hurricane Dennis (centre) hitting north-west Florida and the Alabama coastline, USA, on 10 July 2005 at 1615 GMT. Cuba is at lower right. The hurricane produced winds of up to 190 kilometres per hour (kph) and damaged buildings, power lines and trees. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems in which winds can reach over 240 kph. They can cause immense damage if they hit built-up areas, but lose energy quickly over land. Image taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrodiameter (MODIS) aboard NASA's Terra satellite.
