Pieter van Musschenbroek (1692-1761). 1868 illustration of the Dutch scientist and professor of philosophy and mathematics Pieter van Musschenbroek. Musschenbroek is best known as the inventor of the Leyden jar, the first electrical capacitor, in 1746. He taught at the University of Duisburg in the period 1719 to 1723, then at the University of Utrecht. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1734, he took up a position as professor at Leiden University in 1739.
