Glacial retreat. Image 2 of 3. Grinnell Glacier, Glacier National Park, Montana, USA, in 1981. Grinnell Glacier is located in the Lewis mountain range in the Rocky Mountains of northern Montana. In 1981, the glacier, as viewed from the summit of Mount Gould, covered an area from centre left to the bottom of the image, ending with Lake Grinnell. Glaciers are large, slow-moving expanses of ice, formed from compacted layers of snow. They are sensitive to climate change and in recent years most have retreated dramatically. See images E235/375 and E235/377 for images of the same glacier as seen in 1938 and 2006.
