Highways maintenance, also known as highways operatives and road workers, ensures that roads, pavements and motorway networks throughout the UK are well maintained. Duties may include building brand new roads or widening, repairing and resurfacing existing roads. The job involves a large amount of outdoor physical work using a range of tools. It might mean working at night or during weekends and can sometimes involve a great deal of traveling. Working in highways maintenance also requires a good knowledge of health and safety regulations. You need a good level of fitness to work in highways maintenance as the job can be quite physical. You also have to be able to follow written and spoken instructions and work well in a team. The Highway Maintenance Plan defines the policies and methods for maintenance of the Road Network. It examines standards in relation to the Delivering Best Value in Highway Maintenance - Code of Practice for Maintenance Management document and how it aims to deliver these standards. There are a wide range of functions that are carried out by the Divisional Highway teams. Within the Travel and Transport Briefing Newsletters you will be informed how we effectively implement the prioritisation of highway works. Whilst initially seeking to meet the statutory and safety obligations to ensure that claims against the Authority on the grounds of failure to maintain are kept to a minimum, other works can be undertaken, due to the continuing strategic commitment to highway maintenance. This, along with the transport strategies as outlined within the Second Local Transport Plan, which covers the period from 2006 to 2011, provide both revenue and capital budgets for Divisions to maintain and improve the highway network.
