LlanfylUn, on the Cam, a tributaryof the Severn, is famous for its ale, and a proverb says that Old ale fillsLlanfyllin with young widows. Llanfair Caer Einion is built on the borders ofthe Vyrnwy. The castle from which this Llanfair, or St. Marys Church, derivedits name, exists no longer. Machynlleth, the only town in the western part of the county, known asCyffeiliog, is a cheerful place in the midst of charming scenery. Cardiganshire stretches from the Dovey to the Teifi, presenting a bold facetowards the sea, and rising inland to mountains, which culminate in , sheep farming, and lead mining are the principal pursuits. Abenjstwith, at the mouth of the Rheidol and near that of the Ystwith, hasgrown into a sort of Welsh Brighton, with large hotels and a fine beachremarkable for the quantity of pebbles found on it. The buildings of theUniversity College of Wales adjoin the ruins of a castle founded by Gilbert deStrongbow. Lead smelting is carried on in the neighbourhood. Farther south,on the coast, are Aheraeron, a favourite watering-place ; Neto Quay, with a smallharbour and quarries; and Aherporth, a primitive fishing and bathing , near the mouth of the Teifi, whence it exports the
