Digitized by Microsoft® It will be seen from this table and Chart 3 that in thefour-year period the combined prices of groceries, vege-tables, fruits, meat and fish increased 47% to 55%, thedegree of increase varying in different sections of the rise in price of meat and fish was everywhere con-siderably greater than that of groceries, vegetables andfruits. Meat and fish prices continued in 1918 an upwardmovement which first became marked in 1917, whereasprices of groceries, vegetables and fruit increased onlyslightly, if at all, in 1918. In some parts of the state theydecreased. The rate of advance in food prices as awhole between 1917 and 1918 was less rapid than it hadbeen between 1916 and 1917.
