John S. Paine was born at Uxbridge, Mass., sixty-eight yearsago. He attended the public school until he was twelveyears old, and received the rest of his education at theUxbridge Academy. At the age of twenty he left hisfathers farm and entered the country store of P. Whit-ing &: Son, at Whitings\ille, Mass. After remaining therefor two years he came to Boston, where he began hiscareer, his whole capital amounting to considerably lessthan five dollars. Here he took the quickest means of. JOHN S. PAINE acquiring a knowledge of the furniture trade, and soonbecame a practical cabinet-maker. About forty yearsago he entered into a partnership with his brother-in-law,I^. B. Shearer, which continued until the death of thatgentleman, about twenty-four years ago. Mr. Painethen continued in business for himself in the neighbor-hood in Boston, where his well-known establishmentnow stands. He conducted his rapidly-growing businessalone untiPseven years ago, when his son, brother and nephew becamemembers of the firm,his n e p h e w, M , being a sonof his former years agoMr. Paine bought theland on which h ebuilt the presentimmense manufac-tory and building is onehundred and fiftyfeet square, and con-tains seven floors. Atone time the firm hadbranch establish-ments at Chicago,New York and NewOrleans. Mr. Paines
