This image may not be used in educational posters Chlamydia bacteria. Computer artwork of the non-replicating infectious form of Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria, known as elementary bodies (EBs). Each EB is surrounded by a cell envelope (green) covered in protein spikes (gold) that inject material into the host cells. Within the EB is a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) core (red), which contains the bacterium's genetic material, and ribosomes (purple), the site of protein synthesis. Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection that can go undetected causing infertility. It also causes the eye disease trachoma, which can lead to blindness.
