He was a selectman of the town for overtwenty years, was an alderman of the city, and onthe death of Alayor Griswold became acting mayorof Hartford from Nov. 23, 1835, to April 13, was one of the representatives for Hartford inthe General Assembly at the sessions of 1822, 1823,1826, and 1828, and was sheriff of Hartford countyfrom 1828 to 1834, declining re-election. He wascliairman of the Whig State Central Committee inthe Presidential campaigns of 1826 and 1840. His. An-drew and Lucy (Tudor) Hillyer, and granddaughter of Janus and Mary (Humphrey) Hillyer. Hillyer was in the French and Indian war,and served under Lord Amherst in the expeditionagainst Canada. He was with Lord Albemarleunder Putnam, at the taking of I tavana, and offourteen who went from Simsbury only he andone other returned alive. Later he w
