MODEL RELEASED. Knee arthroscopy. Surgeon performing a knee arthroscopy on a male patient. He is holding an arthroscope (narrow telescope), which will be inserted into the knee to view inside the joint. The arthroscope contains optic fibres that transmit an image of the joint onto a video screen. The patient is under local anaesthetic, and can watch the procedure displayed on the screen. Knee arthroscopy allows the diagnosis of knee problems such as arthritis and inflammation and can be used to repair damaged tissue and cartilage. During the procedure, small tissue samples may be taken (biopsies), which can help diagnose infections.
