An elementary handbook of practical oceanography for travellers, sailors, and yachtsmen. em which varies muchin price in lines of various strength is the actual linesthemselves, which increase in price according to theirweight. We believe that Scotch fishermen often use 60-fathom lines, five lines to a basket; these cost about£1 12s. 6d. per basket. We do not know the weight ofsuch lines, which is, however, probably 3 to 4 poundsper line. A commercial line fishery is carried on off the Portu-guese coast in very deep water, and as the methodemployed may be found useful elsewhere, a brief de-scription of the gear examined and described byVaillant follows. The line used consists of a hauling line, 650 to700 fathoms long, and about J inch in diameter, towhich are fastened twenty to forty hook lines of the LONG LINES 333 same material. Each hook line is about 16 fathomslong, and carries twenty cod-hooks on snoods 5 feetin length. The only weight used is made fast at theend of the last hook line (the first to be shot), and nobuoy is used, the end of the hauling line being made.
