In May of thatyear a police force was established, and consisted of a captain, a lieu-tenant and two patrolmen from each ward. Their hours of service werefixed at twilight to daylight. The first chief was Conrad Pens, a German sailor. The others intheir order of service were: William Ward, Fred Limecooley, PatrickMcGee, Detrick Meyer, Michael Singleton, Hugh M. Deihl, Eugene and Hugh M. Diehl, again. The latter resigned in June, 1889,and Lieutenant Frank Wilkinson was appointed by the police commis-sioners to fill the vacancy. Patrolman Leonard Fuchshuber was appointed. c
