The shell of glowing ionised gas surrounds a dying star, Abell 36, visible in the centre, approximately 1,400 light-years away from Earth in the constellation of Virgo. The red and blue portions correspond to optical emission at red and blue wavelengths, respectively. Behind the nebula multiple distant galaxies can be seen.
