The reduced height of the Adige, opposite it,at flood time, was , or 1621 lines, being 402 feet wide, or57888 lines; now l)y a preceding rule, § VI., in wliich we supposed 1 • b \/ a the velocity as the height, having x ;r:—-—= 269, and conse-quently d = V (^ * •^) ^ I^^^i which being subtracted fromthe height of the Adige before the diminution, there remains23 lines, that is 1 inch 11 lines for the required diminution. 2nd. At the mouth or sluice of the Sabbadina we found that»=r , or 2759 lines; 6 = , or 1231 lines ; a = 27ifeet,or 3960 lines; c = 2280 feet, or 30240 lines, whence x =r 554 andd^ i\/ {z z — xx) = 2703, which, deducted from 2759, the firstheight, gives 56 lines or 4^ 3rd. At the sluice of the New River, when it was of wood, itwas found that z ~ = 1480 lines, b — = 704 us THE CIVIL ENGINEKR AND ARCHITECTS JOURNAL. [April, liiiep, fl = CO feet = 8640 lines, r = 318 feet =: 45792 lines, and .r:= 3(Ki, and d ^ 1441, giving 2| inches for the diminution of theAdige. 4tli. At the Fossa Bellina which is the lowest of the derivativeswith respect to the sea, it was found that z = 1580 lines,h = = 626 lines, a = 60 feet = 8640 lines, c = 258 =37512lines. Whence ,r= 301 and d= V (^-•».») = 1531, whichsuhtracted from 1580, leaves 29 lines for the diminution of theAdige, that is 2 inches and 5 lines. 5th. But at Castagnaro, which is the first and farthest from thesea of all, it was found that i-= = 2050 lines, h= 1491lines, ff = 35064 lines, e = 95040 lines ; dimensions taken above thetwo falls on each side of the Cunetta, wliicli remains in t
