Spotted Sandpiper (Actitis macularius), Sacramento County California USA
Spotted Sandpipers are common and widespread in North America. This species does not have spots in winter plumage but can be easily identified by the inland waterway habitat, fluttering flight and nearly constant tail-bobbing habit. This particular individual's alternate plumage (with spots) is beginning to grow. This bird is stalking a fly which can be seen on a pebble in the bird's line of sight.
