Worker and Kolkhoz Woman (Collective Farm Girl) monument, designed by Vera Mukhina, Moscow, Russia

This enormous sculpture was originally created to crown the top of the Soviet pavilion at the World Fair in Paris in 1937. The organisers had positioned the German and French pavilions to face each other, and each was eager to outdo their counterpart. Somehow Albert Speer obtained details of the enormous Soviet design and ensured that the German pavilion ended up being taller. The sculpture is 25 metres high and sits on top of a 35 metre high pavilion, so it's 60 metres to the tip!
