Fullerene derivatives in AIDS research. A purified sample of a derivative of a fullerene, or 'buckyball', being studied for its effect on reproduction of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The sample is a di(phenylaminosuccinate) fulleroid; two phenylaminosuccinate chains added to a C61 fullerene 'ball'. This molecule alters two of the proteins which the HIV needs for reproduction, and has been shown to inhibit the growth of HIV in infected immune system cells.
