Like theprophet Samuel, he was dedicated to the priest-hood from infancy, and having finished his stud-ies in the Convent of San Bernardino, he wishedto devote himself to the immediate service ofGod, and went to Palma, the capital of the prov-ince, to acquire the higher learning necessary forthe priesthood. At his earnest request, he was 22 AND M O N T E C I T O received into the Order of St. Francis, at the ageof sixteen, taking the name Junipero, after afavorite disciple of St. Francis, and, at the endof one years probation, made his religious pro-. Padre Junipero Serra fession, Sept. 15, 1731. Having finished hisstudies in philosophy and theology, he soon ac-quired a high repuation as a writer and orator,and his services were sought in evcrv direction; 23 SANTA BARBARA but while enjoying these distinctions at home, hisheart was set on his long-projected mission to theheathen of the New World. He sailed fromCadiz for America August 28, 1749, and landedat Vera Cruz, whence he went to the City ofMexico, joined the College of San Fernando,and was made President of the Missions ofSierra Gorda and San Saba. In 1767 he was made President of the Mis-sions which had been established in Lower Cali-fornia, on the expulsion of the Jesuits. On hisappointment, he immediately entered upon act-ive duties, and proceeded to carry out his granddesign of the civilization of the Pacific instructions from the Viceroy of Mexico,the vessels San Carlos, San Antonio and San Josewere fitted out an
