The Roman Forum in Rome, Italy This part of the Forum is at the foot of the Capitoline Hill at the western end of the site. At this time a road (left) cut through the Forum. It was removed and today sightseers now wander the area. The Roman Forum (Forum Romanum, Foro Romano) was originally a marketplace surrounded by important ancient government buildings and the centre of day-to-day life in ancient Rome. Here the Temple of Saturn is right. Behind is the Septimius Severus Arch. Left is the church of Santi Luca e Martina. This image is from a 1950/60s amateur 35mm colour transparency.

The Roman Forum in Rome, Italy This part of the Forum is at the foot of the Capitoline Hill at the western end of the site. At this time a road (left) cut through the Forum. It was later removed and sightseers can now wander the site free of traffic. The Roman Forum (Forum Romanum, Foro Romano), is a rectangular plaza, originally a marketplace, surrounded by important ancient government buildings. For centuries it was the centre of day-to-day life in Rome and it has been called the most famous meeting place in world history. Located in the small valley between the Palatine and Capitoline Hills, the Forum today is a sprawling ruin attracting millions of sightseers yearly. In this view the Temple of Saturn is right. It was an ancient Roman temple to the god Saturn. Behind is the marble Septimius Severus Arch, erected in 203AD to celebrate defeat of the Parthians. Left is the Santi Luca e Martina, a church initially dedicated to Saint Martina, martyred in 228AD. In 625 Pope Honorius I commissioned construction of the church. In 1588 it was re-dedicated to Saint Luca and Saint Martina. It was rebuilt by the painter and architect, Pietro da Cortona, in the seventeenth century. This image is from an old amateur 35mm colour transparency. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1950/60s photograph.
