Freshly Ground are an ensemble based in Cape Town, South Africa with diverse cultural and musical backgrounds and is made up of seven talented musicians from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The band’s unique sound reflects this eclecticism. The music is original and energetic with a fresh mix of musical styles. As a band, their aim is to blend their diverse range of influences, from indigenous African folk music and jazz, to contemporary ‘urban’ styles such as reggae and dance music. Their songs are in both English and Xhosa, and reflect the rich, complex and ever-changing social, political and economic environment of South Africa today.
