archaeological site of Paquimé Casas Grandes in Chihuahua. Paquimé is an archaeological zone of Paquimé Culture, is located approximately 260 km northwest of the city of Chihuahua, in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico and half a kilometer from the town of Casas Grandes. This archaeological site was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998. It was a pre-Hispanic settlement that influenced the northwest of the Sierra Madre Occidental; most of western Chihuahua and some areas of the states of Sonora, Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. Researchers estimate that the population probably grew to some 3,500 inhabitants, but their linguistic and ethnic affiliation are unknown. The site is famous for its adobe buildings and doors in a "T". Of its total length is only a fraction fenced and less excavated. Its buildings have features of the culture of Oasisamérica and demonstrates the skill of the prehispanic architects in the region. In the west of this population is a row of structures built with stone fill and probably were covered with painted lime; those were the ceremonial centers. Some researchers argue that Paquimé had an indigenous cultural development of the culture of Oasisamérica Dulce. Others claim it was the result of the invasion of an elite central Mexican highlands or Mexico. Zona arqueológica de Paquimé en Casas Grandes Chihuahua.
