In the Revrcw (or July, 1897, page 440, we published some dataon the Parsons steam turbines, inchiding a short account of thetests on the Turbinia, a loo-ft. boat which on April 10, i8g7, madea speed of knots, or miles per hour. The first com-pound steam turbine connected to a dynamo was built in 1884; thisunit developed 6 h. p. In 1897 there were said to be 30,000 h. p. ofsteam turbines installed in England, the largest sizes being 700 h. The following is abstracted from Mr. Hodgkinsons paper:Steam turbines may be divided into three classes: i. Reaction,of which Heros, described about 120 B. C, is an example. constructed a turbine of this type which with a steam pres--Hure of 100 lb. per sq. in. at the jets and a 26-in. vacuum ran r. p. m, and developed 20 h. p. on 40 lb. of steam per brake h. 2. Impact, of which Biancas, invented in 1629, is an was the forerunner of the de Laval turbine.
