Pancreatic cancer, Whipple surgery. Image 8 of 13. Close-up of a surgeon's hands during Whipple surgery on a patient with pancreatic cancer. Whipple surgery involves the removal of the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine), part of the stomach, and the head of the pancreas. The jejunum (the next part of the small intestine) is then attached to the remains of the pancreas and stomach to bypass the removed tissue and organs. Here, blood vessels along the stomach (the gastroepiploic vessels) are being divided (cut).
