It was formerly a place of con-finement for State Prifoners, and is at prefent arepoiitory for preferving the antient Records ofthe Kingdom; for which purpofe, an eftablifh-ment was made for the Keeper of ten pounds, af-terwards encreafed to * five hundred pounds a year.
