Jito Tenmu, the Imperial Mausoleum (burial mound, or kofun) of Emperor Tenmu and Empress Jitou. Asuka area of Nara Prefecture, Japan. As the name suggests, buried here are Emperor Tenmu (sometimes spelled Temmu) (d. 686) and his wife, Empress Jito (sometimes spelled Jitou) (d. 702). Empress Jitou is said to be the first Japanese ruler to be cremated. To this day, the site remains part of the Imperial Estate, and strict rules govern access.
