Iron dinosaur
The awesome noise of a vertical cylinder Shay engine has to be heard to be believed with its crashing of geared transmission and swirling exhaust. This wood burning example, built by Lima of Ohio, is a two truck Shay at work for the Insular Lumber Company and is depicted at the head of a loaded train between the planing mill and the saw mill at Bacolod on the Philippine island of Negros. Despite the huge spark arresting chimney, the engine still sprays the surrounding vegetation with fire. Picture dated October 1974.
