GATE TO ROYAL other reeds were stitched perpendicularly, both inside and out-side of the fence, and so there was formed a wall of wicker-work of uniform thickness, having a smooth surface whenfinished ; the wall was further strengthened by stout ropes ofreeds at the top and the bottom, which bound the outer andinner walls together. The appearance of the wall was striking,and the fence formed a barrier against wild animals andagainst any ordinary foe, since the people were only armedwith spears. There were many miles of fencing to be done,because in addition to the main outer fence many inside fenceshad to be built, and as a fence did not last for more than four XI INDUSTRIES 369 years the work on these alone was enormous.
