Brain cancer. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a section through the brain of a 37-year-old with a 3cm-long malignant (cancerous) melanoma (lower left). Melanomas are cancerous tumours arising from melanocyte cells. They are usually skin cancers, but can arise in any area containing melanocytes. This tumour has spread (metastasised) from the skin to the patient's brain. It measures 3 centimetres long.
