Soil samples. Samples of clay (top left), sand (bottom left) and loam (centre right) soils. Soil types can be differentiated by several characteristics including colour and texture. The greyish particles in clay soils stick together, forming heavy soils with poor drainage. They are usually very fertile, however. In contrast, light brown sandy soils are free- draining and easy to work, but are frequently infertile. Loam soil is a balanced soil type with a dark brown colour. It is easy to work and rich in nutrients.
