The Devil’s Punch Bowl is the largest spring-sapped valley in Britain. It's believed to have been created by the process of 'spring sapping'. Where rainwater percolates through the Lower Greensand (sandstone). When it meets the underlying impermeable Clay layer, the water travels horizontally and emerges on the hillside through the sandstone/clay join. The water gradually erodes the soft sand and clay soil, making a hollow. This spring is the point of emergence.
